Full film details

“You are free run under the hell-fire of battle without a single weapon to protect yourself.”

And so he did.

Like his brother, his schoolmates, and young men across the country, Desmond T. Doss is a proud, patriotic American. And so, when the call is raised for troops to travel overseas and fight in the Pacific War, Doss answers.

There’s only one problem – his religious beliefs prevent him from touching a gun.

Determined to serve, Doss puts himself forward to sign up as a medic. But, in order to sacrifice his life for the good of his country, he must first face the judgement and abuse of his fellow soldiers.

Viewed as a coward, Doss is battered, jailed and humiliated before the army will let him travel overseas as a member of the US Military.

But if fighting for his rights on his own soil was difficult, facing the horror show that is the Battle of Okinawa is an entirely different breed of chaos.

Based on the incredible true story of the first American to win the Medal of Honour without lifting a gun, Hacksaw Ridge is directed by Hollywood heavyweight Mel Gibson (Braveheart) and stars Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man) as the USA’s most courageous consciences objector.
