Full film details

As the diplomatic and cultural chasm between Russia and the West appears to widen every day and commentators, politicians and academics struggle to understand why, the extraordinary life of Rudolf Nureyev, who would have been 80 this year, suddenly takes on startling new significance.

Following Nureyev from his turbulent wartime upbringing, through his rise to become the greatest male ballet dancer of all time, to his defection from the Soviet Union in 1961 and his tempestuous later life in Paris and London, Nureyev blends never-before-seen archive footage, expert testimonies, an original score by award-winning film and stage composer Alex Baranowski, and a spellbinding series of exclusive modern dance tableaux - produced by the film’s co-producers, creative content specialists Rattling Stick - and directed celebrated by Royal Ballet alumnus Russell Maliphant to interpret different periods of Nureyev’s life, all of which combines to create a theatrical and cinematic experience like no other biopic.

A quarter of a century on from Nureyev’s death, his story has never been more relevant: his defection to the West is symbolic as Russia and the West struggle once more to reconcile conflicting values; as we obsess over celebrity, Nureyev’s status as a global icon in an age before social media is doubly significant; as the Russian government’s attitude towards homosexuality is seen as medieval in its archaism, Nureyev’s unapologetic openness about his sexuality over half a century ago can be seen for the act of trailblazing bravery it truly was; and finally, having left a legacy in the dance world stemming from Mikhail Baryshnikov to the current era of Marcelo Gomes, Carlos Acosta and Sergei Polunin, it is telling that Nureyev is still widely considered the finest male ballet dancer ever to grace the stage.

Made with the support of The Nureyev Foundation, and with narration by Dame Siân Phillips, contributors to Nureyev: All the World His Stage include Nureyev’s contemporaries from the dance world, from Alla Osipenko to Ghislaine Thesmar to Dame Antoinette Sibley, dance experts including Clement Crisp, Meredith Daneman and the late John Gruen, historian Evan Mawdsley and Nureyev’s personal friends including Tamara Zakrzhevskaya, Leonid Romankov and Liuba Myasnikova.
