Full film details

Zheng Kaisi (Yi Feng Li) is well and truly stuck in a rut. After borrowing millions of pounds from friends, he’s racked up mountains of debt. But there is a possible way out.

He’s been invited to attend a mysterious gambling party on a ship called “Destiny” where he’ll have the life-changing opportunity to clear the money owed. All he needs to do is win the game and his debts will be eradicated.

The rules of the game seem straightforward – or so it seems. Participants must try and capture the star sign of their opponent using pokers marked with rock, paper, and scissors. For each game they lose, the opponent catches a star.

Kaisi has a successful run-in with the cold-hearted principal of the casino Anderson (Michael Douglas), a lousy magician named Zhang Jingkun, and a scar-faced individual who sneaks diamonds into the casino.

But when you’re up against desperate gamblers who will do anything to exploit your weaknesses, it’s a very dangerous game. Kaisi must battle his way through monsters, traps, and violent fantasies to stand a chance at winning – or, more importantly, making it out alive.

A suspense-fuelled fantasy animation from acclaimed director, Han Yan (Go Away Mr. Tumor) and producer Chen Zhixi, who’s famed for her work on Lost in Thailand and Detective Chinatown.
Animal World draws inspiration from the teenage comic book by Nobuyuki Fukumoto and stars the much-loved Michael Douglas (Fatal Attraction), Li Yi Feng (Mr Six.), and Zhou Dongyu (Under the Hawthorn Tree).
