Full film details

Paying homage to vintage film noir, this monochrome murder mystery details the life of Sahra (Elnaz Shakerdoust), a head nurse in a rundown psychiatric hospital.

Sahra’s most recently admitted patient is Nassim (Pardis Ahmadieh), the beautiful wife of Masoud (Navid Mohammadzadeh). But something doesn’t feel right about Nassim’s incarceration. Nassim soon confides in Sahra, revealing that her behaviour is all an act to escape her sinister husband, who she claims is plotting to kill her.

Nassim begs for Sahra’s help, but could the claim all be part of a true mental illness? If the murder plot is real, should the nurse risk being associated with a violent crime?

At home, Sahra is battling her own troubles. The flat she lives in is due to be demolished, and with nowhere else to turn, she could soon be left homeless. To make life even more stressful, her personal and professional life become entwined, and used as a dangerous pawn in Masoud and Nassim’s psychological games…

With its premiere at one of Northern Europe’s most honourable film events, Black Nights Film Festival in Tallinn, this psychological drama has had glowing reviews and includes twists guaranteed to keep you glued to your seat.

Praised for successfully updating traditional noir cinema to include modern concerns and issues, while paying homage to the genre’s most iconic directors, Asphyxia is certain to make many ‘film of the year’ lists for 2018.
