Full film details

Wiktor (Tomasz Kot) and Irena (Agata Kulesza) are on a mission to find Poland’s best folk performers from the villages dotted throughout the country. Those lucky enough to pass the audition stage will be sent to a musical boot camp, where they will learn traditional Polish performances, before travelling to show their talents to political officials and leaders.

On their travels to find authentic, pure Polish performers, the pair discover Zula (Joanna Kulig). Despite hailing from the multi-cultural city and performing a Russian number, the beautiful Zula is hired based on her Soviet ‘look’, fitting the visual brief despite her background.

As they travel the country and develop the girl into a star, Zula and Wiktor embark on a fiery love affair, becoming swept up in one another’s charm and passion. But can two people from completely different backgrounds survive in the new landscape of Cold War Poland?

Critically acclaimed, Cold War has already won numerous awards, including the prestigious Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival 2018 for Pawel Pawlikowski (Ida), who was also responsible for the script.

Taking on the leading roles are Joanna Kulig (The Innocents) and Tomasz Kot (Breaking the Limits) who both give career defining performances in this engaging and enrapturing black-and-white drama.
