When newly separated Alice has a one-night-stand with a younger man, she thinks it’s just one of those post-breakup clichés… Until her mother invites him to move in.
Alice Kenny (Reese Witherspoon) is doing her best to get on with her life. After separating from her husband (Michael Sheen), she’s trying to figure out how to make things feel normal for her two young daughters while finding her feet as a newly single woman.
So, when it’s time to celebrate her birthday, all she wants is a carefree night out with her friends. The wine starts flowing, she bumps into a stranger in a bar, and one thing leads to another – Alice decides to let loose and celebrate her 40th birthday with a bit of spontaneity.
But when she wakes up the next morning with a younger man in her bed, the reality of the situation kicks in. And when her mother (Candice Bergen) shows up early, with Alice’s two daughters in tow, her one-night-stand quickly becomes everyone’s business.
If she got her way, everyone would forget it ever happened. But Alice never seems to get her way.
After finding out they’re struggling artists and aspiring filmmakers, her mother invites the young man (Pico Alexander) and his two friends (Nat Wolff, Jon Rudnitsky) to stay. And just when she thought it couldn’t get more awkward, Alice’s husband shows up, hoping to repair their marriage.
A modern rom-com full of laughs and dysfunctional families, Hallie Meyers-Shyer directs her first feature-film, which stars Reese Witherspoon (Wild), alongside Candice Bergen (Rules Don’t Apply) and Michael Sheen (Nocturnal Animals).
