Full film details

It’s 1951 and the Korean War has displaced thousands of young American men who have been sent over to eastern Asia to defend democracy and combat the red hand of communism.

Marcus (Logan Lerman) is not one of them.

With a desire to pursue education over confrontation, he has other plans. Gifted with an academic mind, Markus breaks free from his working class roots and manages to sidestep conscription by securing a scholarship to a prestigious college in Ohio.

Markus leaves New York behind him, along with the obligations that have weighed him down. He meets Olivia (Sarah Gadon), a wealthy and beautiful girl who seems fascinated by his life in the city, and soon he finds himself equally fascinated by her.

But it isn’t long before the war finds a way to creep into his life.

Though they are distanced from the action, tensions begin to rise across campus, especially amongst the young and idealistic minds that surround Markus.

The restlessness spreads and Olivia’s socialite demeanour begins to crack, pulling him into a web of mystery and instability. Meanwhile, the Dean (Tracy Letts) turns his suspicious eye towards Markus and begins to question his background and beliefs.

He finds himself caught in an undercurrent of conflict and vulnerability, with his own secrets at the centre of it all.

Based on Philip Roth’s novel of the same name, Indignation is directed by James Schamus (Brokeback Mountain) and features Lerman (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) as the conflicted young man, and Gadon (Dracula Untold) as the girl who could derail everything.
