Full film details

South America, 1981. Like most backpackers on the traveller’s trail, Yossi Ghinsberg (Daniel Radcliffe) is looking to meet new people and experience new things. But, Yossi wants to see more than just the well-trodden path of the Machu Picchu and yearns to explore more dangerous and unknown territories, just like his hero, Henri Charrière.

Upon meeting gentle Swiss teacher Marcus (Joel Jackson), and dominant American photographer Kevin (Alex Russell) in Bolivia, Yossi quickly bonds with the two men despite their vast differences. When Yossi chances upon an enigmatic German tour guide named Karl, who offers him the chance to trek through an unexplored area of the jungle, he is instantly intrigued.

Despite his new friend’s sceptical approach to both Karl and his proposed trip, they give him the benefit of the doubt and sign-up and into the unknown they go. But, it’s not long before they begin to realise that not everything in this neck of the woods is as it seems. It also comes to light that Karl isn’t who he says he is.

Tensions flare up and the group are divided, making it an every man for himself situation. And for Yossi, he couldn’t be in a worse place to discover that he’s not much of a survivalist after all.

Greg McLean is best known as a horror writer/director, having penned and directed Wolf Creek (2005), Wolf Creek 2 (2013) and Rogue (2007), but here he handles more mature material with ease. Daniel Radcliffe (Beast of Burden, Victor Frankenstein) heads up a stellar cast, which also features Thomas Kretschmann (King Kong) and Lily Sullivan (Romper Stomper).
