Full film details

18-year-old Mary (Elle Fanning) is obsessed with dark literature and would much rather spend her time reading and writing than doing the chores at home. When Mary meets and falls in love with poet Percy Shelley (Douglas Booth), her life takes unexpected turns in unimaginable ways. Tired of her disapproving parents and hungry for a new start, she leaves London and runs away with Shelley to Europe.

One stormy night, during their stay at the home of Percy’s good friend, Lord Byron, in Lake Geneva, the guests are challenged to write a ghost story. Mary uses her recent experiences in love, loss, betrayal and tragedy as inspiration for her story and names it “Frankenstein”. But this is no ordinary ghost story – Frankenstein has an underlying narrative that’s centred around her life. Mary must get her story published. But in a society where women’s rights are tested, will she be able to get the result she deserves?

Mary Shelley celebrates the novelist’s fascinating life, and her most famous work, Frankenstein. Mary Shelley stars an incredible line-up including Elle Fanning (Maleficient), Douglas Booth (Jupiter Ascending), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) and Ben Hardy (X-Men: Apocalypse). The film is directed by Haifaa al-Mansour, the first female filmmaker in Saudi Arabia.
