Full film details

MIA doesn’t have a typical popstar backstory. The daughter of the leader of the Sri Lankan Tamil resistance, Matangi spent her early life in her war-torn home country, an enemy of the government. With a target on their back, Matangi travelled to the UK as a refugee and became known as Maya to her new friends.

It was in London that Maya became involved with the creative scene, embarking on a musical quest to speak out about the horrors of war at home, and provide a unique voice for a disenfranchised youth culture.

Eventually, she made it to the world stage as MIA, famous for her provocative music, relentless activism, and outspoken attitude towards the media. Throughout her journey, the artist recorded it all, and the results are shown in this fantastically edited mash-up of new and never-before-seen historic footage from the last 22 years.

Directed by Steve Loveridge in his first feature length documentary, Matangi/Maya/MIA was showcased at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival, winning the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award.

An unmissable documentary for fans of the artist and the simply curious, Matangi/Maya/MIA is set to be the hottest music documentary of 2018.
