Full film details

Midnight Family follows the Ochoa family – Fer and his two sons, Juan and Josué – who run a private ambulance firm in Mexico City. Despite the metropolis having a population of around nine million, there are fewer than 45 state healthcare ambulances to serve the public. So, the Ochoas, like many others, have found a solution to plug the gap: offering their own private ambulance service.

They urgently race through Mexico’s crowded streets to help injured patients, transporting them to hospitals in the hope of being rewarded with money for their efforts. But they face fierce competition from other ambulance businesses and even when they are first to arrive at the scene, the patients don’t always have the money to pay them.

Struggling to make ends meet, the family is constantly grappling with challenges including tough legislation and corrupt cops preventing them from accepting patients unless they pay a bribe. Despite it all, the family remains committed to doing good for the community around them.

Midnight Family provides an eye-opening snapshot into the flawed healthcare system in modern Mexico. A fascinating docu-drama from award-winning director Luke Lorentzen (Santa Cruz del Islote, Last Chance U) that features family members Fer Ochoa, Juan Ochoa and Josué Ochoa. The film has received huge international praise, winning 24 awards at film festivals around the world.
