Full film details

Nancy (Andrea Riseborough) lives in the middle of nowhere in a desolate New Jersey town caring for her disabled and abusive mother Betty (Anna Dowd). Emotionally damaged, she is a compulsive liar and has a habit of inventing extravagant identities as a way of bonding with others and escaping her own reality.

After her mother has a stroke, Nancy’s guilt leads her to carry out her most sinister ploy yet. When she catches a news story about a couple whose daughter went missing 30 years ago, she gets in touch, claiming she might be their long-lost child, and drives for hours to meet them.

But her imagination and reality start to blur and she becomes increasingly convinced these strangers are her real parents, believing that she was, in fact, kidnapped as a child. What follows next is a whirlwind of drama as she battles with the inner demons that constantly haunt her.

A directorial debut from Christina Choe exploring the repercussions that result from believing your own lies, Nancy has received huge critical acclaim and picked up the “Walso Salt Screenwriting Award: U.S. Dramatic” at the Sundance Film Festival.

This masterfully-made psychological thriller stars Adrea Riseborough (The Death of Stalin) who puts in a remarkable performance as Nancy. She is joined by a roster of other talent including Ann Dowd (Compliance) and Steve Buscemi (Fargo).
