A mother and her teenage daughter move to a sleepy little town, hoping for a new start. But the more they try to fit in, the further they drift away from each other. A whimsically dark story about coming-of-age (and coming-of-middle-age), Pin Cushion stars Lily Newmark and Joanna Scanlan.

Full film details

Lyn (Joanna Scanlan) and her daughter Iona (Lily Newmark) are a pair of misfits. Awkward, quirky, and just a tad whimsical, they’re content with their funny little routines. From baking sweets to making handicrafts, their lives revolve cosily around each other.

But that’s all about to change.

When they move to a small town, it’s meant to be the chance for a fresh start. But as Iona settles into her new school, she begins to develop a side of herself that doesn’t quite fit into the quaint existence that her mother has so carefully created for the two of them.

After the group of ‘mean girls’, Keely (Sacha Cordy-Nice), Stacey (Saskia Paige Martin), and Chelsea (Bethany Antonia), take her into their circle, Iona finds a teenage edge that her mother doesn’t recognise – or know how to deal with. And when the cutest boy in school, Daz (Loris Scarpa), takes a shine to Iona, both daughter and mother are plummeted into foreign territory.

As the sudden changes threaten to shatter their relationship, lonely Lyn tries to find a few friends of her own – and is thrust back into her own teenage nightmare as she comes up against a group of equally ‘mean women’.

Blending fantasy with raw, dark storytelling, Pin Cushion explores relationships between adult women, teenage girls, and mothers and daughters. The first feature-length film from director Deborah Haywood (Twinkle, Twinkle), it’s been nominated for awards in the 2018 festival circuit and has received critical acclaim across the board. Starring Lily Newmark (Solo: A Star Wars Story) and Joanna Scanlan (How to Talk to Girls at Parties).
