Full film details

Marvin (Finnegan Oldfield) is a young boy living in a rural part of France. Different from his peers, Marvin is bullied at school and at home for his personality traits. Treated as a pariah, Marvin dreams of leaving the small town behind him and heading to the city to become an actor.

Flash forward and Marvin has reinvented himself as Martin, an actor living and working in a bourgeois area of Paris. Despite achieving his dream at an early age, he still can’t help but feel like an outsider, and feels unable to come to terms with his past.

Reinventing Marvin flashes backwards and forwards through the protagonist’s life, as a closeted child trapped in a backwards town, and as an out actor trying to fit in with Parisian life. Directed and written by Anne Fontaine, who was responsible for modern classics Coco Before Channel and The Innocents, this French-language film is a stunning portrayal of one boy’s journey to become a man.

In the leading role as Finnegan Oldfield (Bang Gang) who is proving to be a rising star of French cinema. Co-stars include Grégory Gadebois (The Returned) as Dany – Marvin’s father – and Vincent Macaigne, who previously collaborated with the director on The Innocents.
