Full film details

Being a volunteer doctor in an impoverished country is generally thought of as an honourable profession, something only a respectable person would do.

John Lake (Rossif Sutherland) is exactly that – an honest and ethical young GP who has moved from America to Southeast Asia in order to do what he can to make a difference.

One night, on his way home after indulging in a few drinks at the local bar, John stumbles across a crime in the shadows – a young woman, an intoxicated man, an attempted sexual assault…

He steps into the dark to intervene. Nothing is the same again.

The next morning, a man’s body is found in the Mekong River and John finds himself pinned as the prime suspect. Trapped in a foreign country with a corrupt legal system that is determined to bring him down, his only hope is to reach the American Embassy before the authorities can get to him.

And so a hero turns into a fugitive.

With only his own grit and determination, John must take on the dangers of Laos in a desperate plight to secure his freedom.

From start to finish, this heart-pounding thriller showcases the extremes a hunted man is willing to go to in order to save his life.

A feature-length debut from Canadian director Jamie M. Dagg, River premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival and was awarded Best First Feature Film at the 2016 Canadian Screen Awards.
