Full film details

It’s no secret that dads can have a difficult time connecting with their teenage kids – it’s just one of those things. But David Kim (John Cho) thinks he’s doing a pretty good job of keeping tabs on his daughter, Margot (Michelle La).

Until she disappears.

When he wakes up to a worrying number of missed FaceTime calls from Margot, David tries to get in touch with her. And when he learns that she hasn’t showed up to school, his begins to panic.

He reports it to the police, who initially think it’s a typical teenage runaway case. But as he and the detective assigned to the case, Rosemary Vick (Debra Messing), dig deeper, it seems that Margot has been living an online life where she is someone very different from the girl David knows.

As David connects with Margot’s friends and uncovers her bank statements, videos, social media posts, and search history, the story becomes increasingly complicated. The only thing that’s clear is that he actually doesn’t know his daughter at all.

This experimental and ground-breaking film takes place solely on computer and mobile phone screens, through the lens of things like web browsing, YouTube videos, CCTV footage, and video calls. It’s the feature-length debut from director Aneesh Chaganty and has received much critical acclaim, winning the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize and the Best of Next! Audience Award at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.

John Cho (Star Trek Beyond) stars as the frantic father, alongside up-and-coming actress Michelle La (Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life) as his missing dater, and Debra Messing (Will and Grace) as the leading detective.
