The Birdcatcher

TBC cinema age rating

Torn from her family while escaping Nazi capture, a young Norwegian girl must take drastic action to make it out of the war alive. But each decision she is faced with could spell disaster for those around her. Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, August Diehl and Jakob Cedergren star in this historical drama that offers a lesser-touched insight into Nazi rule in Scandinavian Europe.

Full film details

In 1942, at the height of Nazi rule in Europe, teenager Esther (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) and her Jewish family are apprehended by German officials in their Norwegian home and sentenced to immediate deportation.

While being transported through the snowy countryside, though, Esther manages to escape and scramble to freedom. But she soon finds herself lost in the wilderness, battling the harsh conditions alone.

Discovered by high-level German officer Herman (August Diehl), Esther is mistaken for a lost young boy, separated from his parents. Taken to a nearby farm owned by Johann (Jakob Cedergren), a known Nazi sympathiser, the terrified Esther befriends the farmer’s son, Aksel (Arthur Hakalahti), as she continues to masquerade as a boy.

As Esther spends more time with her unsuspecting Nazi captors, she discovers the truth behind surviving the war: to make it out alive she must abandon her old life and embrace her new existence, transforming completely into her new identity.

Brought to us by Ross Clarke (Desiree), this thrilling historical drama is inspired by true events. Starring Sarah-Sofie Boussnina (Mary Magdalene, Letters for Amina, Comeback), August Diehl (The Emperor of Paris, Kursk: The Last Mission, Allied) and Jakob Cedergren (The Guilty, Compulsion, The Sweeney: Paris), The Bird Catcher is as powerfully inspiring as it is shocking.
