Full film details

Hardborough is a small coastal town in Suffolk where things have always been very much the same. The tide rolls in and out, the tourists visit and retreat, the seasons churn quietly into the next.

And then Florence Green (Emily Mortimer) comes to town and everything changes.

Quiet, polite, and unassuming, Florence doesn’t seem like the sort of person to cause an upset. A widow who has been through her fair share of suffering, her dream is to open her own book shop and spend her days surrounded by the covers and pages she loves most in the world.

She puts every ounce of her being into making her dream a reality and her hard work pays off. She finally succeeds in buying and transforming the Old House, a neglected, decrepit building, into a pretty little bookshop.

But not everyone is as happy about it as she is. The wealthy, opinionated Violet Gamart (Patricia Clarkson) is especially outraged. Horrified at idea that the building has been turned into a store, she does everything she can to ruin Florence’s ambitions.

Luckily, Florence finds friends in unexpected places, such as the eccentric, book-loving recluse Edmund Brundish (Bill Nighy) and the sprightly young shop assistant Christine (Honor Kneafsey). Together, they try to find a way to keep the shop alive while also learning to live their own lives outside of the pages.

Based on the novel by Penelope Fitzgerald, The Bookshop is directed by acclaimed Spanish director Isabel Coixet (Learning to Drive, The Secret Life of Words) and features a star-studded British cast, including Emily Moritmer (The Party), Bill Nighy (Their Finest), Patricia Clarkson (The Maze Runner), and Honor Kneafsey (Miss You Already).
