Full film details

In 1913, during World War I, a young Indian named Srinivasa Ramanujan (Dev Patel) develops a keen interest in mathematics. It’s not long before his interest comes first, ahead of both his job and recent arranged marriage.

Having developed his skill to a level of mastery, he sends letters and his notebooks to a renowned maths professor, G.H. Hardy (Jeremy Irons), who immediately recognises Ramanujan’s talents.

It isn’t long before Ramanujan receives an invitation to enrol and study alongside Professor Hardy at Trinity College, Cambridge. At the age of 25, he leaves his impoverished life in India along with his newly married wife, hoping to receive the academic recognition he seeks.

But praise and appreciation are in short supply at Cambridge, and instead he is only met with racial hostility, from tutors as well as his peers.

However, under Hardy’s tutelage, Ramanujan further develops his skills and becomes a pioneer of mathematical theories.

Battling cultural prejudice, Hardy nurtures Ramanujan’s extraordinary intellect to reveal his gifted talents and ground-breaking theories to the world.

Adapted from Robert Kanigel’s 1991 biography of the same name, this touching biopic tells the incredible story of one of the world’s most gifted mathematicians and stars Dev Patel (The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), Jeremy Irons (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) and Stephen Fry (Alice Through the Looking Glass).
