Full film details

Sixteen-year-old Gardener Elliot (Asa Butterfield) has had what you might call an unusual childhood.

It all begins when his mother, an astronaut, learns she is pregnant shortly after she and her team set off on a journey to attempt to colonise Mars. Too late to turn back, Gardener becomes the first human to be born in outer space – and he begins his extraordinary life on the red planet.

With his mother having died during childbirth, Gardener never learns who his biological father is. He is raised among the small group of astronauts, and though he knows no differently, he can sense something is missing. Earth is only a foreign concept that he has dreamed about, but never really understood.

That all changes when someone catches his attention in an online chatroom and he becomes friends with a young girl from Colorado named Tulsa (Britt Robertson). As their friendship grows, so does Gardener’s desire to travel to the planet that everyone else of his race can call home.

His wildest hopes come true, and Gardener embarks on the journey of a lifetime – to meet the girl who he loves, explore the place he has yearned for, and hopefully find out the truth about the father he never had the chance to know.

This sci-fi romance is directed by Peter Chelsom (Serendipity) and stars Butterfield (The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas) and Robertson (Tomorrowland), alongside Gary Oldman (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban).
