Full film details

On July 22, 2011, young people from across Norway came together on the island of Utøya to attend summer camp. As members of the Norwegian Labour Party Youth League, they were prepared to express their views, debate current events, and forge new bonds with like-minded peers.

Instead, 77 people died, 99 were injured, and hundreds more were left with psychological wounds that will follow them to the very end.

It begins when the young campers learn there has been a bombing in the government quarter in Oslo. The atmosphere changes as they try to wrap their heads around the worrying news and what it means for them.

What they don’t know is that a right-wing extremist has infiltrated the island and is determined to slaughter as many people as he can. Gunfire rings out, sounding impossibly close.

What follows is 72 minutes of confusion, horror, and desperation as the young people try to find a way to survive the terror that suddenly swept across Utøya.

Based on the events that took place at Utøya summer camp, Utøya – July 22 chronicles the living nightmare in real time. Filmed in a single take at the very place the attack occurred, the film documents the exact number of shots that were fired on the tragic day.

Director Erik Poppe (The King’s Choice) worked closely with survivors to try and create a realistic account of what happened to the innocent victims, resulting in an incredibly painful film that has received critical acclaim in Norway and beyond.
