Generations of children grew up with the friendly and helpful Mr. Rogers – but did we really know the man at the centre of the iconic neighbourhood? Full film details

Children’s TV show Mister Rogers’ Neighbourhood aired in 1968 and became a global hit, despite the fact that low production values, a simple set, and a very basic premise meant it could just as easily been a major flop.

But it was Mr. Rogers that made the difference.

An unlikely star, the soft-spoken, cardigan-clad host captivated young people around the world, who loved him for his gentle humour, quirky characters, and desire to teach them about the ways of the world.

Won’t You Be My Neighbour explores the story behind the show, turning the lens on its underrated host and highlighting the quiet genius of Fred Rogers.

With his signature patient approach, he tackled controversial topics including divorce, death, war, and racism, at a time when hardly anyone was willing to speak about them, educating children honestly and thoughtfully through a lens of kindness and love.

Oscar winning director Morgan Neville (Twenty Feet From Stardom) studies the life of Fred Rogers and how he helped us to figure out what it means to be neighbours, despite the differences that could otherwise divide us.
