Pete's Dragon is about a little boy named Pete (played by Oakes Fegley). After a family tragedy, three-year-old Pete finds himself lost and alone in a big, dark forest with only his teddy bear. But is he really alone?
Pete comes across a green dragon, who he names Elliot. Pete and Elliot soon become very good friends. Pete needs Elliot to survive in the wild, and after a while, Elliot starts to need Pete too, because he loves his company.
One day, a family of three, mother Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), father Jack (Wes Bentley) and their daughter Natalie (Oona Laurence) find Pete and take him in. Despite Pete's pleas, Elliot is left behind in the forest! The rest of the film follows Pete and his new family as they overcome the trials and tribulations of trying to find a happy family for both Pete and Elliot. Pete wants to live with his new family but he doesn't want to leave Elliott behind.

Pete's Dragon shows a lovely but unusual bond between Pete and his dragon. You might expect a child would be very scared of a dragon. But Pete is a brave little boy and Elliot is a nice dragon. When Pete first meets Elliot, he asks "Are you going to eat me?" You can hear in his voice that he is much more bewildered than scared.
You might also think a dragon wouldn't want a little boy with him because humans are predators. They have a long history of trying to kill dragons! Once a human hunter finds a new type of animal, he's going to want to hunt it. But Pete is a sweet young kid and Elliot has too kind a heart for Pete to want to ever hurt him. So even though humans and animals do not always get along, especially big animals and little humans, Pete and Elliot develop a true friendship.
Pete's Dragon audiences can expect a heart-warming story which will leave them feeling amazed and tingling with good feelings. If you liked the original from 1977, you will love this.
