Set in 1879, an orphan named Félicie (Elle Fanning) dreams big and sets out to leave her hometown of Brittany for the bright lights of Paris, where she hopes to become a professional ballerina.
Félicie (Elle Fanning) is a small girl who has big dreams – she wants to leave dull streets of Brittany behind and become a star ballerina in Paris.
Encouraged by her best friend and brilliant inventor, Victor (Dane DeHaan), she runs away from home and assumes the role of the privileged daughter of a wealthy family in order to enrol at the Grand Opera House.
But life at the prestigious dance school is not without its problems. Overrun with cold, calculating and ruthless girls who will stop at nothing to succeed, Félicie quickly begins to feel the pressure and her lack of formal training leaves her exposed.
Luckily, she finds encouragement in the shape of the mysterious Odette – the school caretaker who takes her under her wing – and works hard to silence her doubters and become a star.
This charming French-Canadian animated musical is a feast for the ears and eyes, and features the vocal talents of Elle Fanning (20th Century Women) and popstar Carly Rae Jepsen.
Ballerina also enlisted the help of Aurélie Dupont and Jérémie Bélingard from Paris Opera, who were filmed using motion capture in order to create more realistic dance sequences.
