BAFTA winner made in Dagenham

Imagine a massive row with your boyfriend leading to starring in a movie alongside Michael Fassbender. That happened to teen Katie Jarvis. A casting agent spotted her yelling at her boyfriend across the platform of a train station and approached her about starring in Fish Tank (2009). The indie flick, which was shot around Orchard Village, formerly known as the Mardyke Estate, went on to win a BAFTA.

Comedy royalty at Eltham Palace

A stunning Art Deco mansion, it’s not surprising that Eltham Palace was used for scenes in TV series The Crown (it used to be home to actual royalty, after all), but the swanky location also doubles up as the iconic duo’s dressing room in Stan and Ollie (2018.)

Hampstead Heath’s scandalous past

Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett spend many a scene in Notes on a Scandal (2006) sitting on this bench in Hampstead Heath looking out over London. And can you blame them? It’s a beaut of a spot.

If you happened to be walking through Trafalgar Square a couple of years ago, you will have stumbled across Gal Gadot, lots of actors dressed as WW1 soldiers, vintage cars and a massive film crew. That’s because the whole area was closed off for filming Wonder Woman (2017).

The service that broke us

The famous funeral scene from Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) that’s impossible not to cry at – the one when John Hannah recites the WH Auden poem – was partly filmed at St Clement’s Church in West Thurrock. It happens to be in the middle of an industrial state, hence this striking shot of everyone leaving the church with the massive plant behind them.

It’s the (Crouch) End of the world

How do you make an authentic zombie film in London? You can get up before dawn, shut down the city’s busiest streets for minutes at a time and get some epic, barren shots, just like Danny Boyle did in 28 Days Later. OR you can do what Simon Pegg did for Shaun of the Dead (2004) and film it around Crouch End. He wanted to make the film about a “London that tourists don’t visit,” as he told Deadline. “We didn’t want to put zombies on Westminster bridge.”
