8 classic scenes with Elton John soundtracks

Which is the best ever? (Until Rocketman comes out)

The ultimate experience for Elton John fans is nearly here. Rocketman shows how plain Reg Dwight became the feather-and-sequinned megastar, with Taron Egerton in the lead role and Bryce Dallas Howard and Richard Madden racing to keep up. Of course it???s full of his amazing songs. But it???s not the first film to pin key scenes to Elton tracks. Here are eight all-time classics - but which is the best?

THE HAPPY-CRYING ONE

Almost Famous ??? Tiny Dancer
We???re on the tour bus, everyone sad and tired after Billy Crudup???s latest ego trip, then Tiny Dancer comes on the radio and one by one they join in singing and the light comes back into their eyes. Not just the best Elton moment, one of the best musical moments in film.

THE CAMP ONE

Moulin Rouge - Your Song
Baz Luhrmann’s jukebox musical set in 1900s Paris was the film equivalent of an Elton outfit: all fierce flamboyance and fun. In this scene, Ewan McGregor sings Your Song to Nicole Kidman on a starlit rooftop and a moon with a moustache joins in. Because of course he does.

THE SAD ONE

Bridget Jones - Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word
More starlit rooftops as the camera zooms out from Bridget???s window and flies across London to show everyone all happily coupled-up while she???s at home alone. If Mary J Blige is singing an Elton ballad, you know your tears are real.

THE KIDS ONE

The Lion King - Circle of Life
When Harry and Meghan announced the royal baby there must have been part of them that wanted to do it properly, by holding him up on a rocky outcrop for all the gnus while Elton’s Circle of Life blasted out. Can this summer’s The Lion King remake top that? Three words: Beyoncé’s in it.

THE HIGH BODYCOUNT ONE

Kingsman - Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)
Not just a soundtrack but a test of Elton’s own acting skills. In the scene, he’s imprisoned in a theme park until Taron Egerton and Colin Firth break in with guns blazing to rescue him. Check out the bit where Elton drop-kicks a baddie in the face with his sparkly platforms. No wonder Taron wanted to play him in Rocketman.

THE WEIRD ONE

The Favourite - Skyline Pigeon
The only straightforward thing about The Favourite’s final scene, where rabbits pop up as Emma Stone rubs Olivia Coleman’s legs, is the beautiful harpsichord ballad that starts to play. It’s Skyline Pigeon, recorded by Elton when he was 21. He considered it his first great song.

THE BAD HAIR ONE

American Hustle – Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams and Bradley Cooper all went for the same look here: ‘70s, but not in a good way’. But when Elton’s 1973 classic starts to play as they emerge through smoke on the casino steps, it all suddenly seems very cool indeed.

THE SLOPPY ONE

27 Dresses – Bennie and the Jets
And finally, an Elton scene that’s like real life. Bennie and the Jets starts playing so our lovebirds sing along badly, get the lyrics wrong, giggle and screech. The rest of us wouldn’t end up dancing on the bar to a standing ovation... but the rest of us don’t look like Katherine Heigl and James Marsden.
So which is the best Elton John song scene? When Rocketman comes out on 22 May, we???re going to need a whole new list ??? so out your rhinestone specs. It???s going to be a blast.
Based on a true fantasy, Rocketman showcases the formative years of Elton John???s musical career. blank
